In a couple of days, Canadians will come together to celebrate Veteran`s Week from November 5th to the 11th, 2009. During this week, hundreds of commemorative ceremonies and events will take place across the country to honour the achievements of our Veterans and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
This year, residents of Brant are being given an opportunity to recognize Veteran`s Week in a unique way. Petitions, awaiting your signature, in support of the Canadian Soldiers and Peacekeeper`s Memorial Wall Act, have been distributed by my office to our local legions. The petition calls for the establishment of a Memorial Wall to honour Canada`s fallen soldiers and peacekeepers.
The remains of more than 115,000 soldiers and peacekeepers are buried in 75 countries around the world. As their remains cannot be repatriated to Canada, the Memorial wall, inscribing the names of these men and women, will provide Canadians with the opportunity to honour and recognize them.
The motion for a Memorial Wall in Canada was recently introduced to Parliament by Daryl Kramp, MP Prince Edward-Hastings. I am pleased to support Mr. Kramp`s Private Member`s Bill and bring his petition to the constituents of Brant. Please join me in supporting Bill C-454 and the establishment of a Memorial Wall in Canada.
To sign the petition, please visit one of our local legions or my constituency office before November 13, 2009, as the Bill comes up for debate on November 17, 2009.
Let us never forget the thousands of Canadian men and women whose gallant sacrifice has resulted in the peace and freedom that we, as Canadians, enjoy today.
