Canada and Ontario invest $3 million in Six Nations policing infrastructure

Investment will improve facilities for Six Nations policing services

Six Nations – Today, Brant MP Phil McColeman and Brant MPP Dave Levac joined Chief Bill Montour of the Six Nations of the Grand River to announce a joint investment of $3 million to improve policing infrastructure on Six Nations.  The federal government is contributing $1,560,000 and the provincial government $1,440,000.

“We’re very pleased to be receiving this funding,” said Chief Montour.  “Together with our federal and provincial government partners we’ll be building a state of the art and ecologically responsible police station.”

The funding is Six Nation’s share of $20 million announced this past Tuesday by the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, and the Honourable Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry, on behalf of the Honourable Rick Bartolucci, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services for Ontario to improve policing infrastructure in twelve First Nation communities in Ontario.

“The federal government committed to giving First Nations police the tools to prevent and solve crimes, and we’re delivering” said McColeman. “This investment goes a long way to helping Six Nations Police make Six Nations a safer community.  They’ve worked hard and come a long way from the two basement offices in the old Lady Wellington Hospital.”
"Ontario is committed to supporting First Nations policing efforts in reducing and combating crime," said MPP Dave Levac." "In fact by supporting the Six Nations of the Grand River with an investment of over $1,400,000 we are not only helping law enforcement combat crime but assisting Six Nations in growing their economy."

As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government is providing $10.4 million of the total $20 million investment to improve First Nations policing infrastructure.  The province of Ontario is investing $9.6 million to improve First Nations policing infrastructure through the 2009 Ontario Budget - Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future.
