"Canada’s Economic Recovery Still Fragile” McColeman Tells Bantford Homebuilder’s Association
(Brantford) – Brant MP, Phil McColeman, says that while Canada has weathered the global economic storm better than any other country in the G7, its economy still remains fragile. Mr. McColeman made the comment in a speech at a dinner meeting of the Brantford Homebuilder’s Association.
“Canadians have good reason to be cautiously optimistic about the coming year,” said McColeman. “Since last July, 285,000 jobs have been created and 225,000 jobs have been saved through expanded work-sharing agreements.”
Mr. McColeman credits Canada’s Economic Action Plan for stimulating the economy. “From coast to coast, infrastructure dollars have helped build everything from bridges and roads to hockey arenas and water treatment plants. In Brant, our Government has invested close $100 million in stimulus funding.”
Mr. McColeman says his Conservative Government’s policies to cut taxes, improve EI benefits and job training have also helped to stimulate the economy. He says that as the country’s economy improves and more and more Canadians start working again, the Government will return to balanced budgets by winding down stimulus spending and reviewing government operations. He says the Government has no plans to raise taxes.
