Brantford, Ontario – The Government of Canada is investing $17,300 into the Brant Museum and Archives to help protect and preserve its historical artifacts. The announcement was made today by Phil McColeman, Member of Parliament for Brant, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
“These historically significant artifacts tell the story of our community,” said Mr. McColeman. “They are a part of our heritage and it’s important to carefully preserve them for future generations to come.”
The Brant Historical Society, which operates the museum, will use the money to purchase and install a high density shelving unit and portable environmental monitoring equipment. The funding will also be used for the relocation and digitization of 3,500 artifacts.
“Proper storage not only ensures the preservation of the artifacts, but makes them more accessible for use in exhibits and by researchers,” said Joan Kanigan, Executive Director of the Brant Historical Society. “This funding will enable the Brant Museum and Archives to make tremendous improvements to how we care for the artifacts that we hold in trust for the people of Brant.”
The federal government is providing the funding through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
