Government of Canada investing in Long Term Job growth Strategy for Sand Plains Region
July 30, 2010

BRANTFORD, ONTARIO
– The Government of Canada is helping municipalities in the Sand Plains region examine major changes in the agri-food business and identify areas for potential growth. The $40,750 investment was announced today by Member of Parliament for Brant, Phil McColeman, on behalf of Agriculture Minister, Gerry Ritz.

“Our Government is committed to helping the Sand Plains region find new markets and develop skills to grow the agricultural economy,” said MP McColeman. “This initiative is a great example of how we’re working together with industry to boost job growth and strengthen our communities.”

The Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie will undertake a study that will look at the changes occurring in the agri-food business to identify economic and labour force development opportunities. The study will identify emerging growth sectors in agri-business, tourism, renewable energy and food processing that could be used as a vehicle for economic growth. It will also include identifying training needs to meet current and future demands for the local community. Once the study is complete, the report findings will be provided to each of the municipalities in the region as well as other interested stakeholders.

Funding is being provided through the Sand Plains Community Development Fund administered by the Ontario Association of Community Futures Development Corporations. The fund targets community-based initiatives that support regional development, attract and retain people and investment, and stimulate business development and job creation.
