OTTAWA – February 9, 2009/ Phil McColeman MP for Brant and former Laurier University Governor has been elected Vice-Chair the new Conservative Post-Secondary Education Caucus.  The inaugural meeting was held this past week to discuss how the government and MPs can best serve post-secondary institutions.

“I believe there is a real need for this type of caucus,” said McColeman. “Post-secondary institutions are vital to Canada’s and Brant’s ability to succeed. In an unstable economy, investment in these institutions becomes increasingly important.”

Brant riding is the proud home to the Brantford campuses of Laurier, Nipissing and Mohawk College. The new caucus is open to all Conservative MPs with a post-secondary institution in their riding.

“Our first meeting was positive and productive,” said McColeman. “Although post-secondary education is provincial jurisdiction, there is a lot we can do as MPs to support the institutions we represent.”

The Conservative government has taken significant steps to support students and universities. Most recently, Canada’s Economic Action Plan invested $2 billion to support repairs, maintenance and construction at colleges and universities across Canada. This will enhance the research capacity of our universities, enable them to attract students and help them provide a better educational experience.

“Colleges and Universities strengthen our communities and our country,” said McColeman. “I see this new caucus as a positive step in expressing my commitment to support post-secondary education.”
