Statement on National Access Awareness Week
June 02, 2009
(Ottawa) June 2, 2009 - This afternoon Brant MP Phil McColeman rose in the House of Commons to make the following statement:

“Mr. Speaker; this week is National Access Awareness Week.

As the parent of a 22 year old intellectually disabled son, this week reminds us all of the very real challenges faced by persons with disabilities and the importance of improving access so that these very special people can fully participate in all aspects of Canadian life.

Our government supports this goal and is taking important steps to help.  Some of these include:

Providing an additional $75 million for the construction of new housing units for people with disabilities.
Introducing the Registered Disability Savings Plan and the Enabling Accessibility Fund.

These investments are working to help person with disabilities lead more active lives so that they can realize their true potential.

During this week, I encourage all Canadians to do their share to help persons with disabilities get the access they need to more fully participate in all aspects of Canadian life.”
