(Brantford) June 12, 2009 – Caralyn Smith of Ohsweken has been selected as the winner of the first annual Phil McColeman public safety essay contest. The announcement was made today by McColeman at an award ceremony held at the Brantford Police Station.
Ms. Smith’s essay entitled Reducing Vandalism and Crime in Brant County was selected by a panel of three judges including Brantford Chief of Police Derek McElveny, Superintendent of Education with the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board Trish Kings, and Acting Dean of Laurier Brantford, Kate Carter.
Ms. Smith will receive a $500 prize donated by the Neziol Group to be put towards her post-secondary education.
“It was an excellent submission,” said McColeman. “Clearly Caralyn did her homework.”
Participants were required to submit a 500 word essay on a workable solution for making Brant a community that is safer from acts of vandalism and crime. The completed essay had to be submitted to
mccoleman.p@parl.gc.ca as an attachment and include a cover page with the theme of the essay and contact information including name, address and telephone number. The deadline for essay submissions was May 31st, 2009.
