SCOTLAND, ONTARIO – The Government of Canada is investing in an innovative pilot project that could teach other farmers how to diversify their income, decrease their energy costs and make their farm more environmentally friendly. The investment of up to $100,000 was announced today by Member of Parliament Phil McColeman (Brant), on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.
“Our Government puts Farmers First by investing in innovative approaches that will improve the bottom line of producers,” said MP McColeman. “This project is another great example of how we are investing in communities across Canada like this one, making them stronger and more competitive in the global economy.”
Shelegy Organics will install solar panels and sell solar electricity to Hydro One. By installing the solar panels, this will also decrease the amount of energy that is carbon (fossil fuel) based being generated on the farm. Installation of the equipment will be completed by a local contractor and the manufacturer of the panels is also located in the Sand Plains region.
This investment is being provided through the Sand Plains Community Development Fund administered by the Ontario Association of Community Futures Development Corporations. The fund targets community-based initiatives that support regional development, attract and retain people and investment, and stimulate business development and job creation.
